The author's purpose was to show that even the wimpiest of kids can be heroes (that is, if they find the right stuff!). I gave this book a 4 out of 5 because there is little if any storyline, just little short stories. However, the Yu-Gi-Oh Duelist series does have a storyline.
This was awesome. I grew up watching the show and I rewatched it recently and I still love it so I wanted to give the manga a try. This is fantastic and has many of the elements of the show minus the cards which haven’t appeared yet. The writing and storylines are clever especially when determining the rules of the games being played. The main characters are cool with Jonouchi (Joey Wheeler) being my favorite good guy in the manga as he was in the show. The artwork was also solid. This is a fun This was awesome.

This is a fun read and if you like the show you’ll enjoy this too. A few months ago I started watching Yu-Gi-Oh!
The anime, both the original one (which follows the manga) and the the one mainly about Duel Monsters, and I thought ' This anime is good, I want to read the manga.' So now I've finished the first volume. In this first volume we get to know the main characters and get a glimpse of what the Millennium Puzzle can do. This is the back story you don't get by only watching the 'Duel-Monsters-Yu-Gi-Oh!'
I grew up with Yugioh and recently started rewatching it with my little cousin. So, I was like, let's read the manga too. I will refer to the characters with the names we used in the Greek dub (I believe the English dub uses the same names). I personally prefer the anime.
The way Yugi's alter ego is drawn in the manga is creepy. Also, the punishments.they are.not what I expected. I also liked better the way the friendships started in the anime.

Like between Tristan and Ribbon-chan and Tea and Yugi. I hope volume two will be better. Oh and no mention of any cards yet, aside of the first page. If I understood correct this is like before what the anime showed us. This wasn't what I was expecting; here i was thinking it was would be like the anime with people battling it out with cards at every which way but no, the first volume was nothing like that. I love this series and I love the card game as well; god, it's just so good! I don't remember the 'dark' Yugi being so creepy in the anime (and I saw the Japanese version).
He gets this look on his face that reminds me of dolls and clowns and other things you don't want to see right before you go to sleep. I do remember the Shadow Games though. Mostly they are fairly justified, although you can imagine that some one without magic would have a great deal more difficulty enacting any punishment on these kind of people much less a fitting one. Mostly they are fairly justified, although you can imagine that some one without magic would have a great deal more difficulty enacting any punishment on these kind of people much less a fitting one. The language and violence may be excessive for the audience that the show was targeted to, but there isn't really any sex or innuendo that I recall. I loved the TV series (from 2000) and decided I had to finally read the manga. This was a solid start to a manga series. It wasn't amazing but there was enough here to keep me interested.

He punishes them with his shadow game powers and I found the whole concept to be pretty cool. As a note, the art is weird. Like it's even weird for manga, which is a high bar. I know that some people definitely won't give the books just because they are turned off by the art. Apparently I missed this part of my childhood, so thought I'd try it.
Quick light read; fun and humorous (expect unreal and over-the-top) with very YA themes (bullying, parents, justice, being too young to do anything). I enjoyed it enough I'll probably read the second to see where it goes. Premise is Yugi is a nerdy freshman who likes puzzles. An ancient Egyptian puzzle ends up in his possession, and when he assembles it, he gains an alter ego who enacts justice by playing dark games with bad people which play on their arrogance, greed, etc. Problem is, he doesn't remember any of it. And his friends are noticing weird things happening. You might have heard of Yu Gi Oh through pop culture.
It's not only a children's card game, it's also an anime and manga about people playing a children's card game, not to mention the abridged series on the internet. This is not that. It's a precursor. In its first incarnation, the Yu Gi Oh manga concerned itself with games of all kinds, made deadly by the magic of an ancient Egyptian puzzle and the spirit housed within it. While the card game that would become its most famous aspect makes an appearance in this first seven-book series, it doesn't show up here, in volume one. Instead, we get games involving stabbing money, playing explosive table hockey and that old gem that parents everywhere love, 'let's see who can stay quiet the longest.' The original seven-volume Yu Gi Oh series is an odd bird. It's got this weird whiplashy tone thing going on.

The characters are ostensibly normal high school kids doing basically high school kid things -going to school, gossipping about celebrities, getting part-time jobs, trying to watch pixelated porn on the pay channels. But the games and some of the situations that set them up are.ridiculously.
dark. And when I say ridiculously, I don't mean 'very.' I mean the situations are so ridiculous it can be hard to take them seriously. Like the school bully who decides if his patsy can't scrape together a lot of money (200k yen) in 24 hours he's going to go after him with a knife. Or adults beating up on kids, just as a matter of course.
Or a hardened criminal casually discussing killing people. But even darker than THAT are the penalties for the losers in these games. Some people are driven insane. One's literally set aflame. And then the story's like 'Well, THAT was fun!' And we're back to normal school stuff again.
So, anyone familiar with my tastes can probably already guess. I LOVE this first volume, even if the art hasn't quite settled in yet.
It's so ridiculous and wild, lacking the arching storylines and card games of the later series. But I love the variety and the oddness. My review may be a bit biased, as this is both my favorite anime and manga. I have watched this for years and not a day goes by that I don't think about it. This manga, and the accompanying anime, are what inspired my interest in mythology over a decade ago. This is the first volume of, what in the anime, is called Season 0, which was only shown in Japan. It does not tie directly into the original series and things were changed between these seven volumes and the original series.

This is also the reason why Dark Yugi is so extremely dark in this volume, which he wasn't in the original series. When reading the seven volumes that show Season 0, I would recommend suppressing everything you know about the anime or manga, otherwise, this may confuse you. Differences aside, this is an intriguing story in which we follow Yugi and his struggles as Dark Yugi goes on a rampage.
Despite not fitting in with the actual series, this is a wonderful read, if a bit darker than other volumes not belonging to Season 0. Readers are introduced to a handful of characters and thrust right into the action. There's no slow introduction to the world and everything around it - it gets straight down to the nitty-gritty.
Overall, despite the differences between this and the actual series, it also has similarities and is a great read for fans wanting to see how things developed between this version and the true one. Because, despite the differences, it offers a unique view into the 'What if's?' The version that most audiences are familiar with is actually Duel Monsters, which is the sequel series to the original Yu-Gi-Oh series, with this being the first volume. Here we see Takahashi's love of games manifest throughout the story, with some creative 'fights' and conflicts being resolved through the playing of said games. The themes of friendship and loyalty are strong throughout, with other prominent themes being forgiveness, accepting others, and justice.
If you're a fan of games, manga, anime, or the super popular Duel Monsters version of Yu-Gi-Oh, then I highly recommend this! Though it doesn't have anything to do with the card game we've come to love this first installment is a really fun ride. It centers on a schoolboy named Yugi who solves an ancient puzzle and starts regularly being possesed by a spirit from ancient Egypt with a fetish for playing games with dire consequences. It is a lot darker than the later more card game-oriented volumes but it fits the theme. It is also quite unique to see the bad guys get their comeuppance in such brutal ways and Yami Yugi is actually quite the anti-hero when you think about it. The characters have a decent amount of depth and I liked seeing the friendship between the main group grow. The games are inventive and have a certain edge to them (explosive air hockey, money stabbing etc.) It's a fun, interesting read and one I can highly recommend (along with the rest of the series). This was a solid start to a good and famous anime. Now, if you guys are expecting this manga to be like the anime, you are mistaken.
The manga doesn't become like the anime until Yu-Gi-Oh Duelist Vol. This first vol introduces all of the characters. If you've seen season 0, then this is basically how the first 7 volumes of the manga will play out. Of course, the manga is definitely more violent than its anime counterpart.

A lot of people have found Yami to be scary in these 1st volumes, but personally love the sadistic streak he has going on here. I really like how the shadow games focus on turning all the wrongs people have done against them. Eventually they would have been punished for their misdeeds anyway. And imo, they deserved it.
All in all, a fun vol. The thing I didn't like about it was the more pervy scenes and how Jounounchi kept saying only girls do that or boys shouldn't act like that like, urghhh. Other than that, once again a fun read. Look forward to reading the next volumes.
